I've written about this in my blog somewhere before. The idea of physically experiencing something through one sense, and then interpreting it through another is something that I still think about alot. I have a good friend with the 'disorder' and his experiences are really remarkable.

As far as concepts go, I used an image of rough turbulent waters on the outside and calm water for the letter to the stockholders to give the viewer a sense that the executives/CEO have everything under control in the difficult economy.

The images are cross sections of the ground that advance from wild and organic to totally controlled and synthetic. I used them to explore the physical development of land for human use.

I struggled with the class because every assignment required us to use multiple layers in Photoshop. Most of the work came out looking like cut+paste 'make a scenes.' My lab TA just sent me images from my favorite project I did in foundations this semester.

Statement:

I can’t talk about jello without talking about my religious upbringing as a Mormon. Jello is served at nearly every Mormon function including funerals, weddings, picnics, and potlucks. There were usually a variety of jello dishes available at these events and they came in all flavors, usually involving some kind of fruit or multiple fruits suspended within. Jello is so common at church functions that Mormons will even joke about it themselves.

Personally, I dreaded jello.

Jello meant having to endure countless church meetings where I felt alienated and out of place. Although I did find the appeal of Mormonism, I never wanted to be apart of it. I found most of their beliefs to be ridiculous or destructive. Most of my Mormon friends and family acknowledge that parts of the religion are silly, but they simply tell those that are 'struggling' with it to continue practicing the religion and “have faith.” This contradiction is baffling to me. You have to have faith to be apart of the religion but you have to be apart of the religion to have faith. The spoons suspended in jello represent this difficult conundrum.

In the beginnings of this project I was just working with silverware (I definitely didn’t think I would use it to represent faith). I started with a metal set, but I decided to use plastic when I drew the connection to my religious beginnings, and this idea progressed to suspending them in jello.

This transformation revealed some interesting relationships between the red jello and white plastic spoons. The convex surface of the jello mold is echoed in the curvature of the spoons. More importantly, the random dispersion of the spoons produces a chaotic element contrasting the pristine jello mold which speaks to the confusion I am trying to convey.

Callie Shell is a photojournalist who has been following the Obama campaign since the beginning. Lots of beautiful shots in here.

Four years ago Time photographer Callie Shell met Barack Obama backstage when she was covering presidential candidate John Kerry. She sent her editor more photographs of Obama than Kerry. When asked why, she said, "I do not know. I just have a feeling about him. I think he will be important down the road." Her first photo essay on Obama was two and half years ago. She has stuck with him ever since.

I am so excited that we will be having an inspiring/glamorous couple in the white house next year!

Billie Grace Lynn inspired me.She was at BSU for the opening of her show tonight, and she was a very engaging/dynamic speaker. To give you an idea of what she was like, she started her lecture by telling us about how after her mother died when she was 19, she took on her name and as a result- took on her identity.

Lady was the best kind of crazy.

I loved the videos that she showed of her kinetic sculptures that reacted to touch.. I can't find a youtube video, just know that they are awesome.

I have seen Truth's stuff around the interweb before. He uses product waste like PVC to create graffiti in urban environments. I love that he uses geometric shapes to echo the building shapes in the same way that fungus grows to trees.

I was just reading through Julia's 108 blog and I came across her blog about Steve Bishop. He does some pretty amazing stuff with taxidermy and various light bulbs. I love the effect that the florescent bulbs have in this one. There's something about florescent lighting that makes things feel clinical or mundane, when normally a fox suspended like this would look violent and gruesome.

I'm still trying to figure out why I am so into Kevin Taylor's work this morning. It has something to do with the feel of his subject matter- something about the subjects' posture and positioning strikes me.. possibly because they're all hunched over? I've always thought of slouchers as the observers- the silent types, the "still waters run deep" kind of people. The people that have everything to offer if they can only get outside of themselves.

I have been sketching this hunched over bear/monster for years, and it is always almost exactly the same. I need to do more with it..

I went to 'Art in the Park' and BAM today.

The Catherine Chalmers cockroach exhibit was definitely the highlight of my Saturday. I loved the 'Execution Room' where she photographed cockroaches being tortured to death through electrocution, burning, and exposure to poisonous gas.

Does that make me an awful person?

At first I thought it just appealed to the curious seven year old in me that used to put jars of ants in the freezer and tear the legs off of spiders, but how far off is that from kids that graduate to torturing mammals? Where should the respect for life begin/end?

I doubt the exhibit was meant to be profound, but it actually made me look at insects differently.

I heard this story on NPR recently about one of the few remaining Brutalist churches that a historical society is trying to preserve. I think the historical society is definitely overstepping on this one, especially because the church is so awful in its functionality and looks.

RE: Hipster: the Dead End of Western Civilization

Aww, come on.. I'm sure there were people writing things like this about the hippie, grunge, punk, and hip-hop movements. Every new aesthetic is going to piss somebody off, and the hipsters are no different.

First off, kids were dressing in vintage clothes and wearing skinny jeans long before American Apparel (a great and truly American company btw) and Urban Outfitters. I think the industry was quick to pick up on the trend and find the market, but they did not invent it.

Second, how is indie music (the premise) not a statement? These are bands that don't sign onto major record labels and aren't played on the radio. They're all about making music for the sake of making music. They don't have to subscribe to what major labels want from them, and the result is unique, innovative, and interesting. The same can't be said for the manufactured-pop that comes off the radio and MTV, and in a time when Brittany Spears (and half of America watches American Idol for God's sake) still dominates headlines, I find this refreshing.

You want a manifesto? How about this: Fuck the music industry- we'll make our own.

I don't disagree that superficiality is a driving force behind the trend, but only as much as any fashion statement or any identification with a certain type of music.

Danielson: a family movie.

This was a really tragic music documentary. It's all about this family that tries to make indie folk/Christian music, but really... they just aren't any good. Eventually one of their collaborators, who happens to be Sufjan Stevens, totally overshadows them when he goes solo. I don't think that's what made it tragic though- I think it was 'Brother Danielson' (the lead singer) and his blind ambition. Behind his cheerful demeanor, he seems really sad and desperate.

Really, I wish I liked the Danielsons music, but this movie just made me want to listen to Sufjan's old stuff.

I read the graphic novel of this a few months ago and then rented the movie last week. It is definitely a must see/read.

It's the autobiography of a young Iranian (Marjane Satrapi) and it explains the modern Iranian political situation and how it evolved in a really entertaining way. It definitely gave me some perspective on the Middle East today, and the stylized animation is A+.

It was somewhat anti-climactic, but what do you expect from a biography of somebody who isn't dead?
